Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique
The Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM), founded in 1984, is a private applied research and development centre specialized in micro- and nanotechnology, systems engineering, microelectronics and communications technologies.
More than 450 highly qualified and specialized employees from various scientific and technical disciplines work for CSEM’s headquarters in Neuchâtel and the regional centers in Alpnach, Landquart, Muttenz, and Zurich.
With a turnover of about 75M€, CSEM offers its customers and industry partners custom-made, innovative solutions based on its technological expertise derived from applied research. CSEM’s mission is to enhance the competitiveness of industry, by developing applied technology platforms in micro- and nanotechnologies, material science and photonics, and transferring them to the industrial sector.
In the past, direct transfer of CSEM technologies has resulted in a number of new products or projects for space, aeronautics, transportation, energy, security, manufacturing, life sciences and telecommunications industries. Furthermore, through the founding of start-ups, CSEM has also been very successful, creating 24 companies over the past 7 years, with a total turnover in excess of 49 M€, and over 500 jobs, thanks to additional venture capital investment of more than 120 M€.
The MEDTECH activity at CSEM involves over 40 engineers (~50% with PhD) and has been certified ISO 13485 (Medical Device development) since 2014. It has long-term and widespread competencies in the development of complex systems and microsystems including know-how and IP in low-power wireless sensors for human-monitoring applications (sensor electronics and housings, signal processing and advanced feature extraction at the sensor level or in the cloud, big data analysis).
Physiological signals such as electrical bioimpedance, respiration rate, activity, chest sounds, ECG, photo-plethysmography, NIRS, non-occlusive blood pressure, and core body temperature are typically addressed.
Emphasis is given on wearable systems that are comfortable, inconspicuous, and easy to use and to maintain.
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest university in Greece covering all disciplines.
Approximately 74,000 students study at the Aristotle University (3952 at Doctoral level).
The Lab of Computing, Medical Informatics and Biomedical Imaging Technologies (LOMI) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was founded in 1990 and since then has possessed a continuous role in Medical Informatics and Biomedical Engineering research and development. Through its direct link to the University Clinics of Aristotle University, its research team has the ability to develop state-of-the art ICT for health solutions and evaluate the outcomes through trials and pilots. From the first years, LOMI has participated in numerous R&D programs in ICT and health at European and also national level.
Also, since 1998, the lab has run the graduate programme in Medical Informatics.
Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel
The Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) (CAU) was founded in 1665.
CAU is Germany’s northernmost State University and the scientific centre of Schleswig-Holstein.
The founding faculties were the Faculties of Law, Philosophy, Medicine and Theology. In addition to these original faculties, the Faculties of Agricultural and Nutritional Science, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Business, Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering are integrated into the Kiel University.
CAU educates about 27 thousand students in 190 degree programs. CAU sees itself as a modern State University of interconnecting academic cultures. With its university hospital it is one of the biggest employers in the region.
The University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein (Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein) (UKSH) is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with more than 70 clinics and institutes.
It offers outstanding medical treatment and excellence in research and education with nearly 10,000 employees, 2,470 patient beds and more than 100,000 hospitalized patients and 240,000 outpatient cases. It provides top research at the interface of medicine, science and technology and maintains research co-operations with universities all over the world.
The research activities within the WELMO project will be carried out by scientists belonging to the Medical Faculty of CAU, specifically to the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at UKSH, Campus Kiel.
SMARTEX s.r.l is a small limited liability company founded in 1999 with the aim of developing e-textile or new electronics structures compatible with textile processes and manufactures.
Core activity is the implementation of bio sensing apparels (T-shirts, bands, vests, etc.) able to monitor vital signals, as electrocardiograms, heart rate, respiration signal and rate, index of activity as well as bio-potentials like EMG. Moreover systems based on piezoresistive textile sensors allow acquiring biomechanical signals for the recognition of gesture and posture.
Moreover Smartex has a long expertise in the integration of standard electronics components and their inter-connections in wearables (Jacket, tracksuit, insole etc..) in order to collect data from end-users in real-life conditions without limiting the comfort.
Smartex owns the intellectual property and the technical knowledge to implement the textile sensing, innovative solutions for hardware integration, and the knowledge to manage different wearable applications spanning from sport to clinical rehabilitation.
ELSYS Eastern Europe DOO
ELSYS Eastern Europe is a services company specialized in the design of electronic systems as well as in the development of embedded and application software, with extensive expertise in areas of ASIC Front-end design, Digital ASIC Design Verification, AMS ASIC Verification & Physical design, Embedded software and FPGA Design.

Regarding WELMO project Elsys Eastern Europe contributes with its extensive knowledge in the area of IC Layout design generated by successful completion of 21 different layout projects during the past five years.

The participation in the WELMO project is carried out through the Laboratory of Clinical Informatics, a cell within the Adaptive Computation Group of the Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra (CISUC).
The laboratory has a vast experience in fundamental and applied research on medical informatics, machine learning and bio-signal processing, and has been involved in several R&D projects in the p-health area at national and European levels, such as LINK (H2020-692023), WELCOME (FP7-611223), HeartCycle (FP7-216695) and MyHeart (IST-2002-507816).
